The York debut of DreamWorks’ Madagascar - The Musical and the return of last year’s hit for youngsters Grandad’s Island headline the half-term treats at York Theatre Royal.

Go wild in the main house and join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip hip Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they bound onto stage in the musical adventure of a lifetime Madagascar – The Musical in the Main House (26th February – 2nd March).

Based on the smash DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – The Musical follows all of your favourite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar.

Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York's Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends – Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo – have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape – with the help of some prodigious penguins – to explore the world.

Filled with outlandish characters, adventure galore and an upbeat score, Madagascar – The Musical will leave audiences with no choice but to “Move It, Move It!”

Madagascar – The Musical is directed by award-winning Kirk Jameson, who previously directed Selladoor’s 2013 revival of Seussical: The Musical at the Arts Theatre.

A big success at York Theatre Royal last year, Benji Davies’ Grandad’s Island returns to the Studio (26th February -2nd March).

Syd’s favourite person in the whole wide world is Grandad. And Grandad’s favourite person is Syd.

Join the intrepid duo as they head off on a heart-warming adventure filled with songs, laughter and jungles that will change their lives forever.

Benji Davies is an illustrator, author and animation director. Grandad’s Island won the children’s book category of the AOI World Illustration Awards 2015 and was crowned Best Picture Book and overall Children’s Book of the Year at the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards 2015.

Director Matt Aston, who also adapted the book for the stage, says, "I first read Grandad's Island in a book shop in the summer of 2015 whilst looking for a new story for my two boys. I knew immediately I wanted to adapt it for the stage."
