Bolton Little Theatre brought laughter to the stage this evening with a presentation of Mr Wonderful, a play written by James Robson and directed by Steve Gill , acted by a cast of four to an almost capacity audience.
The stage is divided into three sections featuring a bar and the bedroom and lounge of the Green's residence. There is music played during the blackout of moving from one scene to another and it being reset, although this works smoothly I feel takes a little longer than necessary.
The play reveals some touching scenes between mother and daughter, often with emotional blackmail from Phoebe, the bed-ridden, with questionable Alzheimer’s, mother of jaded 45 year old Norma Green, who feels life is passing her by. Surprisingly encouraged by her mother, Norma resorts to the lonely hearts column of the classifieds and so begins her search for the man of her dreams. As Norma, Lisa Barlow has a demanding role showing a range of emotions and acting abilities which she portrays impressively. You cannot help but to warm to her character and with each disastrous date hope that she will find her true match. Phoebe is endearingly performed by Sue Gill who already has her 'Mr Wonderful' a much loved teddy bear that no man could match up to. Throughout she gives glimpses of her vulnerability and calculating ways, perhaps not always having her daughter’s best interests at heart.
First on the dating scene is Eric Box who certainly doesn't tick any of Norma's boxes and the one sided conversation with a hint of innuendo is given by Michael Morris. Morris performs as several characters during the play showing a skill in adapting to each one and bringing much laughter to the audience. Phoebe insists on Norma relating her dates to her, secretly pleased when it hasn't gone well, living in fear of being left alone. When Norma meets Geoff Lazenby and truly believes this is the one.... her own 'Mr Wonderful', Phoebe tries hard to deter him with hilarious comedic moments and perfect timing given by Gill. Matthew James is perfectly cast as Geoff Lazenby and totally believable as Norma's perfect love interest, tall, handsome, dashing and charming, but is there a darker side to him? Is he all that he appears to be?
I will not go any further into the storyline as it would be unfair to give the full plot away. This is an enjoyable play which depicts several sides to each of the characters and tonight I am sure there were moments many of the audience could relate to. Not just a comedy but also an emotional journey of the love between a mother and daughter with moving performances from the entire cast.
This was my first visit to this theatre and if this is the quality of their productions will not be my last.
