Leeds’ greatest writer Kay Mellor will directing the world premiere of her multi award-winning ITV series Band of Gold at the Grand Theatre in November.
In Band of Gold the award winning dramatist will revisit the lives of a group of women - Carol, Rose, Anita and Gina - as they battle to survive working in Bradford’s red-light district.
First aired on ITV in March 1995, Band of Gold captivated over 15 million viewers each week starring Geraldine James, Cathy Tyson, Barbara Dickson, and introducing future multiple Oscar nominee Samantha Morton to our screens.
The ground-breaking crime drama ran for two series after which Kay felt the series had run its course, but now over 20 years on she breathing life back into this iconic TV series that made her name.
“I get asked once a day if I’m going to bring Band of Gold back.” says Kay Mellor: “My answer will now be yes, on stage at The Grand Theatre! I’m thrilled that it’s going to premiere in my home town.”
This new production follows a sell-out run of Fat Friends The Musical, which premiered at The Grand in November 2017.
“We are so excited to welcome our good friend Kay Mellor back to The Grand Theatre & Opera House with another hugely successful stage adaptation of one of her many iconic TV classics,” says Leeds Grand General Manager, Ian Sime.
“Kay knows Leeds and Yorkshire audiences like no other and is one of the great writers of our time; this is going to be pure gold.”
