Leeds Playhouse has issued a canine casting call to find the perfect pooch to play Toto in their Christmas family musical The Wizard of Oz opening in November this year.
The theatre is looking for up to four dogs to star as Toto, the small, cheeky four-legged friend who loyally follows Dorothy on her quest over the rainbow and down the yellow brick road. The dogs who win the role will need to be well trained, have an adorable nature that will shine on stage and will be comfortable and small enough to be picked up by a young person, or carried around in the famous wicker basket.
The Playhouse welcomes applications from dogs of both genders, who are over a year old, and whose owners genuinely feel their pooches have the energy and endurance to play this important role over the 9 week period.
This is a voluntary role, but successful owners will be paid a contribution towards their travel expenses. Dog owners will need to fill in an expression of interest form found on Leeds Playhouse’s website, and successful canine hopefuls will be invited to auditions on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st August.
Directed by the Playhouse's Artistic Director James Brining, this production aims to be a spectacular and fun-filled seasonal musical, and will play in the entirely transformed Quarry Theatre following a yearlong capital redevelopment programme.
The Wizard of Oz is on from Wednesday 20th November 2019 to Saturday 25th January 2020.
