Three short plays, three performers and a whole host of underwater fun. Gare Du Nord Theatre Group have created an immersive production tackling the pressing issues of the day in a nonsensical way that challenge the viewer to look for the sense.
When the audience enter the basement space of The Whiskey Jar they are confronted with a stage full of piles of rubbish and overflowing bin bags dumped in the space. The three performers are already sat on the stage before the show begins humming and singing sea shanties. They don’t let you ignore them and carry on with your conversation – they make sure to make enough noise so you can’t forget they’re there. When the show begins it becomes apparent that they are representing different sea characters, and the rubbish takes on a new meaning as the audience think about the plastic pollution in the sea.
The three short plays presented different issues and sea creatures – a seagull struggling with the rising sea level, killer whales discussing veganism, jellyfish fighting turtles etc. Each animal was cleverly signified by simple props, for example the turtle was symbolised with glasses and a rucksack.
The immersive element was mainly in the lighting – the synopsis promises a ‘show in the dark’ and they definitely do not disappoint. The performers also attempted to involve the audience by walking through them and in particular knocking over chairs whilst playing blind jellyfish. The noise from the bar above also adds to the atmosphere and gives an underwater effect.
This production really was something different, and a fresh, innovative idea. There is definitely the potential for something great, however one can’t help but feel that the “buzzwords” could have been expanded for further substance. Nevertheless, the sea slant on these serious everyday issues was amusing.
Underwater is being showcased as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, and there’s still time to catch their final performance tonight (Wednesday 3rd July) at 7.30pm. With just under an hour running time in total, a great location, and the opportunity to support new theatre – you’ve got nothing to lose. https://manchesterfringe.eventotron.com/?event=38612
